Exercise for parents in India when you live abroad: a guide for NRI families

Short answer

The most reliable way to keep parents in India active from abroad is a live, small-batch class they attend at a fixed time, screened by a physiotherapist and measured so you can see progress from a distance. Look for weekly reports with real numbers, same-day alerts for missed classes, and batch times that suit India, not your time zone.

Why is it so hard to look after parents’ fitness from another country?

Three things get in the way. Parents tell you everything is fine because they do not want to worry you. You cannot see whether they are moving. And when you suggest exercise, it becomes a nag. The fix is to move the accountability to a group and a coach who are there every day, and to replace "are you exercising?" with numbers you can look at.

What can I actually see from abroad?

  • Attendance, class by class, and a message the same day if a session is missed.
  • Sit-to-stand count and balance-hold time, tracked over weeks.
  • A plain-English note from the coach every Sunday on WhatsApp or email.
  • Any incident or change in the physiotherapist’s protocol.
  • Siblings can be added to the same Sunday thread, so everybody has one version of the facts.

Do class timings work across time zones?

Your parent attends in India time: morning at 7 AM IST or evening at 5 PM IST. You do not need to be awake. The Sunday report reaches you wherever you are, and the monthly one-to-one family session is scheduled around your time zone. For reference, here are the batch times in common NRI locations (standard time; daylight saving shifts one hour).

How do I get my parents to agree?

Invite them to the free assessment call and let the physiotherapist talk to them directly. Most parents say yes once someone asks them rather than about them. Be there on the call, and if siblings disagree, put everyone on it so you all hear the same summary.

What if something goes wrong while I am far away?

Ask any provider for their written protocol. Ours: the coach stops the class, stays on camera, and alerts the physiotherapist and you at the same time. If it looks cardiac or stroke-like, an ambulance is called to the home address on file immediately. We do not wait.

Common questions

Do families outside India sign up for Vayayam?

Yes, a good share of our families live outside India, including the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Australia. The assessment call can be scheduled around your time zone.

Do I have to attend the classes?

No. Your parent attends. You receive the Sunday report and can join the monthly one-to-one family session.

Are my parents’ health details kept private?

Collected with written consent, stored with restricted access under India’s DPDP Act 2023, and seen only by people who need them. Classes are never recorded.

Which cities in India do you cover?

Classes are online, so any city with a stable internet connection works.
