What is Vayayam (Vyayam)? Meaning, spelling and benefits

Short answer

Vayayam is the Sanskrit word vyāyāma (व्यायाम), meaning purposeful physical exercise. It is also written Vyayam, Vyayama, Vyayaam or Vayayaam; they are all the same word. Vayayam is also an Indian company that runs live online exercise classes for adults 45+, in batches of six, screened by a physiotherapist.

What does vyayam (vyāyāma) mean?

Vyāyāma (व्यायाम) is Sanskrit for bodily exercise: deliberate, structured physical effort. In the classical Ayurvedic texts, including the Charaka Samhita, vyāyāma is listed among the daily practices for keeping the body strong and the joints supple. A well-known Sanskrit verse sums it up: व्यायामाल्लभते स्वास्थ्यं दीर्घायुष्यं बलं सुखम्. Through exercise one gains health, long life, strength and well-being.

Those texts also give a limit. Effort should stop at about half of one’s capacity (balārdha), at the first sweat on the forehead and a faster breath, not at exhaustion. That is the same idea modern physiotherapists use when they say "work hard enough to feel it, never so hard that form breaks down".

Is it Vayayam, Vyayam, Vyayama or Vyayaam? Which spelling is right?

They are all the same word. The Devanagari spelling is व्यायाम, and the scholarly romanisation is vyāyāma. Because Hindi speakers drop the final "a" in speech, Roman-letter spellings vary: Vyayam, Vyayama, Vyayaam, Vyaayam, Vayayam, Vayayaam, even Byayam in Bengali and Odia usage. Search engines treat these as close variants, so searching any of them finds the same topic.

Vayayam is the spelling we chose for our company name because it is easy to say and type. If you were looking for "vyayam classes", "vyayam for senior citizens" or "vyayam online", you are in the right place.

What are the benefits of vyayam (regular exercise) after 45?

After 45, muscle mass, bone density and balance begin to decline unless they are used. Regular exercise slows that decline. The World Health Organization recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week for adults, muscle-strengthening on two or more days, and, for people 65 and over, varied activity that emphasises balance and strength on three or more days.

  • Stronger legs and hips, which make stairs, getting up from the floor and getting out of a car easier.
  • Better balance and a lower chance of falls.
  • Healthier joints. Moving cartilage and strengthening the muscles around the knee and hip eases stiffness for most people with mild arthritis.
  • Steadier blood pressure and blood sugar when combined with the doctor’s treatment.
  • Better mood, sleep and confidence, especially in a group.

What is the Vayayam programme?

Vayayam is a supervised online exercise programme for adults 45+. Classes are live on video for 45 minutes, three or more days a week, in a batch of six so the coach can watch every person’s form. Before the first class a registered physiotherapist screens each member and writes a safety protocol. Every Sunday the family receives a written report with attendance, sit-to-stand and balance measures, and a note from the coach.

It is built for families where the adult child lives in another city or country and wants proof that a parent is moving, not just a promise. Adults who sign up for themselves use it the same way.

How do I start?

  1. Book the free 20-minute assessment. The physiotherapist speaks to your parent directly, ideally with you on the call.
  2. The physiotherapist tells you honestly whether the programme is right, or whether one-to-one physiotherapy is the better route first.
  3. A 30-minute one-to-one setup call gets video working and sets the phone height, so nobody has to learn technology on day one.
  4. Join the first live class with one link. No app, no password.

Common questions

What does vyayam mean in English?

Vyayam (व्यायाम, vyāyāma) means physical exercise: deliberate, structured effort to build strength, stamina and flexibility. In Ayurveda it is a core daily practice for health and long life.

Is Vayayam the same as Vyayam?

The word is the same. Vayayam is simply the spelling Vayayam uses for its company name. Vyayam, Vyayama, Vyayaam and Vayayaam are other Roman-letter spellings of the Sanskrit word व्यायाम.

Is vyayam the same as yoga?

No. Vyayam means exercise in general, such as walking, strength work and stretching. Yoga is a broader discipline that includes postures, breathing and meditation. Both help older adults, and gentle yoga can be part of a vyayam routine.

How much vyayam should a person over 45 do every day?

The WHO recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, which is about 30 to 45 minutes on five days, plus strengthening exercises on two or more days. Start lower if you have been inactive, and build up gradually.

Can I try Vayayam before paying?

Yes. The 20-minute assessment with the physiotherapist is free, and so is a trial of the classes. Plans start at three months because meaningful change takes longer than a month.
