Do online exercise classes actually work for older adults?
They work when they are live, supervised and regular. The biggest reason exercise programmes fail after 45 is not the exercise, it is that people stop. A live class with the same five other people and a coach who notices an absence solves that. A library of videos does not.
Online also removes the barriers that keep many parents at home: a long commute, unsafe roads, an intimidating gym, or a knee that makes the car journey the hard part.
What should I check before enrolling a parent in an online class?
- A qualified screening before day one. A registered physiotherapist should ask about heart conditions, blood pressure, past falls, surgeries and medicines, and say no when the programme is not right.
- Small batches. Up to six people lets one coach see every knee and back. Classes of 30 or 50 are a webinar, not supervision.
- Cameras on, live. The coach has to see the person to correct them.
- A written emergency protocol. Ask what happens if someone falls or feels chest pain: who is called, in what order, and whether the home address is on file.
- Measured progress. Look for objective numbers (sit-to-stand count, balance hold time), not "you will feel better".
- Privacy. Ask whether sessions are recorded and how health data is stored. In India this is covered by the DPDP Act 2023.
- No pressure on commitment. A free assessment first, and a clear refund rule.
How much exercise do adults over 45 need each week?
The WHO recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, muscle-strengthening on two or more days, and for those 65 and older, balance and functional strength work on three or more days. Three live classes of 45 minutes cover about 135 minutes of that, so most people add a short daily walk.
What does a live online class look like at Vayayam?
Each class is 45 minutes, live, with cameras on, in a batch of six. The coach greets members by name, watches form and modifies movements for sore knees or stiff shoulders according to the protocol the physiotherapist wrote. After class the coach logs attendance, and if a member misses a session the coach messages the same day. Two misses in a row and a founder calls; three and the physiotherapist reassesses.
Classes are not recorded, by design. Several parents told us being recorded was the one thing that would make them refuse.
What do we need at home?
- A phone, tablet or laptop on a stable stand, set so the coach sees the whole body.
- A clear patch of floor about the size of a yoga mat and a sturdy chair without wheels.
- Comfortable clothes and flat, grippy shoes or bare feet on a non-slip surface.
- Wi-Fi or a good mobile signal. We test this on the setup call.
Common questions
Are online exercise classes safe for senior citizens?
They can be, when a physiotherapist screens each person first, the batch is small, cameras are on, and there is a written emergency protocol. Anyone with uninvestigated chest pain, a recent cardiac event or very high blood pressure should be assessed in person first.
My parent is not good with technology. Can they still join?
Yes. At Vayayam we do a 30-minute one-to-one setup call before day one and test the device. After that your parent taps one link. There is no app, login or password.
What time are classes?
Batches run at 7 AM and 5 PM India time, three or more days a week.
Is an online class as good as a gym or a park group?
For adults 45+ who want accountability, safe form and measured progress, a small live class is often better, because the coach sees each person and the family sees the results. Walking in the park is still excellent on top.
What if my parent has arthritis or high blood pressure?
Controlled blood pressure, arthritis, mild diabetes and back or knee pain are common reasons people join. The physiotherapist adapts the protocol. Blood pressure above 180/110 or uninvestigated chest pain means a doctor first.
